Teaching & Courses

Sally has a fund of training, experience and respect for her educational activities. Her  distance  learning courses on Introduction to Botanical Illustration and Watercolour Techniques are now available. Her book The Botanical Illustrators’ Handbook is a readable and comprehensive guide for botanical illustrators.  

She was Art Tutor at Kingston Maurward College, Dorset between 1999 and 2021, and a former tutor at the Eden Project, Cornwall and The Springhead Trust, Shaftesbury, Hillier Gardens, Romsey, King Henry's Walk Gardens Islington, Green and Away, Bransford, Worcester.
She was an invited demonstrator from 2002 to 2005 at Art in Action.

Sally has been a tutor for the Botanical Illustration for the Horticultural correspondence College since 2011.

Sally does workshops for organizations at special request.

2026 Courses

17th May 2026- Introduction to Watercolour

at the Dorset Wildlife Trust Centre at Chesil, Weymouth


This packed one day course takes the beginner from the colour wheel  through the use of complimentary colours for contrast and shadow.

A few simple exercises demonstrate handling washes and adding pigment to give tonal depth.

Handling paint wet for colour blending and dry for sharp edges offers a variety of techniques.

Finish by painting a flower or landscape using both wet and dry techniques.

Quality materials are supplied., and you keep the brush and palette. Bring your own sketchbook and pencil.

Natural History Watercolour workshop
at Dorset Wildlife Trust Centre,Chesil, Weymouth
This two day workshop in the delightful setting at Chesil is led by Sally Pinhey with Margaret Tebbs who will help with and demonstrate recording the details of the natural world around you.

23rd and 24th January 2027 -  How to Draw, Learn to see as an artist sees


This two day “How to draw“ course covers on the first day,

  1. Seeing edges and spaces. Line drawing,
  2. Mass, using shadow to show shape, and Negative spaces, seeing and drawing reverse shapes How to Draw,

The second day we cover

  1. How to measure correctly
  2. Perspective and foreshortening, using 4 simple rules to show 3 dimensional objects in 2 dimensions.
  3. Composition
  4. Introduction to watercolour, washes  and some handling techniques.

Painting materials are supplied but bring your own A3 sketch pads and 2B pencils.
